Call for Submissions for The Farthest Shore: Fantasy from the Philippines

From Banzai Cat's blog:
Secondary fantasy worlds are well-written fantasy stories that take place in a self-contained and self-consistent fantasy world created by the writer. These can be epic fantasy, high fantasy, or even dark (horror) fantasy. “The Farthest Shore: Fantasy from the Philippines, edited by Joseph Nacino & Dean Francis Alfar” will be published electronically to make this collection of stories available to a wider international audience. Through this anthology we will be able to show the world that the Filipino writer can create worlds with the best of them. Combining these two ideas—the short story and secondary fantasy worlds—is well-within the Filipino author’s ability. As a guideline though, we are not looking for treatise or travel guide books of the secondary fantasy world. In the end, a good story and the humanity of the characters in them must take precedence over the well-formed setting. In keeping with the concept of fantasy secondary worlds, stories based on Filipino mythology are acceptable.

Fiction Submissions Calendar is Up

Ever wanted some sort of calendar that could help you keep track of story deadlines, and make it easier to cram? :P I've just set up the Events Calendar widget on my blog in order to track submission dates that I think may be relevant to the interests of speculative fiction writers. See the new baby on the sidebar! Numbers marked in RED have events scheduled for them - hover over the number to see the title of the event, and click on it to show the details. Currently there are only seven entries there: five for October and 2 for November. Most of the openings came from announcements in Philippine Genre Stories (thank you, Sir Kenneth!). I'll be adding more as I find them. ...I'm thinking of making this thing an events calendar for anything related to the local writing scene, but I'm not yet sure if I have the machineries or the time to do this. I'm not sure, either, if a similar and more comprehensive calendar already exists; I'd be glad to link to it and just filter in the speculative fiction avenues, if so. I'll be doing my own research, but I'll be grateful for any info and suggestions. If you know of a deadline that should be here but isn't, please let me know?

Three-Headed Monster Publishing Calls for Submissions

First spotted at Philippine Genre Stories. This is from Ria Lu of Talecraft:
THREE-HEADED MONSTER PUBLISHING CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

So, you think you can write? Well, we're a new player in the industry,
and we're looking for a few good Romance Stories.

What we're looking for: Really good Romance Fiction, especially
Fantasy, Sci-fi, Paranormal, and Historical Romances. We're looking
for stories with new ideas. We're NOT looking for stories that
resemble those that are already often being published in popular
romance pocketbooks. There's too much of those already.

What we're giving:
1.)A royalty of 30% of what we make from your story. In other words:
(Selling_Price – Bookstore_Commissio n) * 30% = Writer's_Royalty.
2.)International Exposure. We will be selling internationally.
3.)You get to keep your copyright. We only ask for non-exclusive
rights to publish.

Submission Guidelines:
-Works must be in English, 50,000 – 100,000 words.
-Initially, submit a 1-page summary of your story, and the first 3
chapters. Don't submit the complete manuscript yet. If we like your
story, we will contact you for the full manuscript.
-Make sure you self-edit your submission before sending it to us.
-Works must be submitted in RTF format, 8.5" x 11", 1-inch margin on
all sides. Font must be Arial or Times New Roman, font size 12, double
space.
-Send summary and first 3 chapters to inquiry(at)3hmpublishing(dot)com. Don't
forget to include your full real name, pen name (if any), address,
landline number, mobile number, and a little information about yourself.

At the moment, we are only accepting Novel-length Romance Fiction. We
encourage mixing Romance with other genres like Fantasy, Sci-fi,
Paranormal and Historical. But if you think you have a contemporary
romance story that has an interesting plot, by all means, submit.

For questions and inquiries, don't hesitate to email us at
inquiry(at)3hmpublishing(dot)com. We look forward to hearing from you."

Philippine Action Fiction: call for submissions

Since genre fiction also interests me, I'd like to share this open call for submissions with everyone. First spotted on Banzai Cat's blog:

Philippine Action Fiction

We would like to invite you to contribute a story to the first ever action-adventure fiction anthology in the Philippines! The action-adventure genre has long been downplayed by critics as shallow and lacking in literary merit. We disagree; a well-written action-adventure story contains all the necessary elements of good fiction. We believe that this genre deserves recognition if only for the sheer reading pleasure it accords the audience, in part due to the vicarious experiences, the likes of which real life so seldom allows.

We are looking for stories written in English that provide excitement and thrills through fast-paced action and adventure. Action-adventure stories may take the form of detective or crime stories, espionage, the supernatural or even science fiction. The stories must feature a Filipino protagonist while the setting can be the Philippines or other countries (as in the case of espionage). The stories may be set in the present day, the historical past (no alternate histories) or the imagined future (Earth based, no interplanetary romps). Stories must be 10 to 15 pages long, double-spaced with a font size of 12.

Send your stories to: philactionfiction at gmail dot com

We hope to continue to expand Philippine fiction with this anthology. Send us your contribution soon!

Sincerely yours,

Emil M. Flores and Gerald T. Los Baños

Call For Submissions: PGS Special Crime/Mystery/Suspense Issue

This is technically not spec fic, but it should still be interesting to spec fic writers out there. The Digest of Philippine Genre Stories is coming out with another special issue - this time for crime/mystery/suspense stories! Kenneth Yu has put out a call for submissions, and in it he says:
Some restrictions: when we say crime/mystery/suspense, we're talking the realist kind. No cross-genre. Don't mix it up with scifi, fantasy, horror, etc. Ichi wants hard-boiled, gritty, dirty, down-to-earth, stuck-in-the-mud, empirical kind of crime/mystery/suspense fiction. To use TV shows as an example, think those programs on the Crime/Suspense or Fox-Crime channel on cable right now (Law & Order, Dexter, Cold Case, CSI, etc.). And keep the stories Rated PG people. You can get as close to Rated R as you want, just don't cross the (yellow police) line. Think deeply about character and motive, folks, as well as the common themes of such stories, like justice. Or injustice, for that matter. Other notes: The story need not be set in the Philippines. Given how spread out Pinoys are, it is conceivable to write a story set anywhere in the world. Come up with your own conflict/situation. Ah, but Filipino leading characters, please.
Read the guidelines and more here.
